This journey will take you from the pristine wilderness of the Khentii Mountains to the wide, open spaces of the central steppe. The Baga Khentii Mountain Range, arguably some of the most beautiful peaks in Mongolia , has a landscape of pine and birch forests. In the summer the ground is littered with a proliferation of wild flowers and as the colder months come on the leaves of the trees display a magnificent array of autumn colours. Following this we will then come to one of Mongolia 's largest and most impressive examples of Buddhist architecture, the Erdenzuu Monastery. This is one of the most glorious examples of the revival of the Buddhist religion in Mongolia , where the temples are slowly and lovingly being restored and are once again teaming with chanting monks. The Monastery lies near the town of Karakorum . Although little evidence remains of the great man himself, this was the site from where Genghis Khan launched his army, which eventually created the biggest empire the world has ever known. Our journey to the central region of Mongolia will provide you with the chance to visit a local herdsman family and learn about the nomadic lifestyle. A visit to the ancient capital of Mongolia, Karakorum, will place you in the spot where Genghis Khan launched his mighty cavalry. Your tour will also be highlighted with sightseeing in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, including monasteries and museums. Please enjoy the Festival with us. The main events are three sports of horse racing, archery and wrestling. Young children, often riding bareback, race horse over huge distances. The winning horse is anointed with mare's milk and mantras are chanted. The wrestling competition is for men only and can take hours to complete, depending on the skill and training of the wrestlers. Archery is the most sedate sport of the three but still fascinating to watch the strength and expertise that is required and the tradition that goes with it. The Naadam is a 'must-see' event for any lover of festivals and celebrations.

Highlights of Mongolia covers the roads well travelled to the places that have become like good old friends to us. This journey visits the central and northern regions of Mongolia . The waterways are crystal clear, the nature pristine and the forests abundant. We made pioneering journeys some years ago to many of the places on this trip, such as the picturesque White Lake in Arkhangai and the even larger mass of water to the north - Lake Khuvsgul . They are still firm favourites and a sheer delight to visit. Apart from the serene nature we also visit the peaceful monasteries of central Mongolia with their intricate architecture and fascinating history of Tibetan Buddhism.
