Quick Reference Itinerary
Day 1Upon arrival in Mongolia's capital city, Ulaanbaatar, you will be transferred to the Bayangol Hotel. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a leisurely program of sightseeing around the city visiting the Natural History Museum and the Fine Arts Museum. Both museums house impressive displays of historical Mongolian artifacts. Our evening entertainment will be a traditional Mongolian concert. Dinner and overnight will be at the Bayangol Hotel. Day 2Today, we will set out driving west of the capital towards Karakorum and drive to a place known as "Piece of Sand." Our drive will take us through open steppe land passing rivers, streams, rolling hills and sand dunes. The "Piece of Sand" is a long strip of sand that stretches from the Gobi Desert into the central region of Mongolia. Here, we will head towards our ger camp for overnight accommodations and in the afternoon visit a local nomad family. This family herds Bactrian (two-humped) camels and you will be given the opportunity to take a short ride on these great animals. Day 3This morning we will continue our journey to the town of Karakorum. This was once a thriving metropolis during the days of Genghis Khan and his son when the controlled the largest empire the world has ever known. Today, little remains of the former days of glory and Karakorum displays Soviet apartment buildings and wide central squares. Following lunch at the ger camp, we will visit the majestic Erdene Zuu Monastery. This monastery suffered much under the communist purges of the last century but miraculously was spared from complete destruction. In former times, the walls of the monastery housed hundreds of temples and thousands of monks. Today, these places of worship throughout Mongolia are being restored. Dinner and overnight accommodations at ger camp.
Day 4We will continue driving west and into the Khangai Mountain range. In the early afternoon, we will arrive deep in the mountains to the beautiful Tsenkheriin Hot Springs. These hot springs shoot directly from the mountains and reach high temperatures of up to 80 degrees Celsius. We will overnight at a ger camp near the springs. Our ger camp has a pool with spring water where you can enjoy swimming. Day 5Today we will drive out of the hills along some mountainous roads into the valleys that lad to Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. This lake is nestled between mountains covered with green grass and dotted with volcanic rock. We will overnight at a ger camp near the lake. Day 6Today we will enjoy a day of rest around the lake. There will be opportunities for hiking to Khorgo which is an extinct volcanic crater that lies within a few kilometers of the lake. You may also choose to visit a local nomadic family or just sit by the lakeshore and enjoy the beautiful scenes of Mongolia. Meals and overnight accommodations at the ger camp. Day 7Today we will begin our drive to the northern part of the country into Khovsgol province and onto Moron, the provincial capital. The drive is absolutely gorgeous and filled with countryside hills, fast flowing rivers and alpine forests. It is little wonder that this area is known as the "Switzerland of Mongolia." In the late evening, we will arrive at our ger camp just outside of the town for dinner and overnight accommodations. Day 8After breakfast, we will visit an ancient burial ground surrounded by reindeer stones near Moron. We will take a three hour drive from Moron to Khovsgol Lake. On arrival, we will go to our ger camp for dinner and overnight accommodations. Day 9A day of rest and leisurely activities at Khovsgol Lake. This lake contains 3% of the world's fresh water and is the 14th largest lake in the world. The lake is known it's crystal clear waters and pristine natural surroundings making it a truly idyllic setting. All meals and overnight at ger camp. Day 10Our morning will be spent around the lake. In the afternoon, we will return to Moron and visit the local market. Overnight accommodations at a hotel in Moron. Day 11We will set out early driving to our ger camp in Bulgan province. It will be a full day's drive. Meals and overnight accommodations will be at ger camp. Day 12After breakfast at the ger camp, we will drive to Amarbayasgalant Monastery. This monastery is located in the valley of the Iven River of Selenge province. Amarbayasgalant Monastery was built in the 1730's in honor of the Zanabazar, the first Bogd Gegn (1635-1723). It was largely destroyed by the Communists in 1937 but today is being restored. After a visit, we will head to our ger camp for dinner and overnight accommodations. Day 13We will complete our return trip to Ulaanbaatar, approximately 350km on paved road. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the Bayangol Hotel. Our evening program will be a local concert featuring national music and dance followed by dinner at a local restaurant. Day 14Transfer to the airport for departure international flight. |
